The new Memphis Editions 2024 are out! Once again, we have worked with artists from our annual programme and are delighted with the variety of works created by Clara Boesl, Siggi Hofer, Katharina Anna Loidl, Ruedi Reinhard, Axel Töpfer & Björn Kämmerer, Marianne Vlaschits and Andreas Werner. This year's editions are again characterised by a wonderful diversity of artistic styles and perspectives, and provide a reference to exhibitions both at Kunstraum Memphis and in other contexts.
From kitsch to copies, Clara Boesl dissects aesthetic phenomenologies and fads and reassembles the parts. Dijon was designed exclusively for Memphis and emphasises the idea of the edition: casting as a method of reproduction, an ever-so-slightly different copy of what is always the same. The title refers to old masters and delicious mustard, the work claims to be good art for under the sofa. Ruedi Reinhard (1940-2018) is one of those ‘old masters’. His work is characterised by radical reduction, formal precision and a refusal of narrative. We are particularly pleased to have Reinhard's IDUS edition in our programme; it was kindly made available to Memphis by his wife, the artist Christiane Maier Reinhard. With gift basket, Siggi Hofer poetically follows on from the analysis of the legibility and nesting of social processes in an image-heavy culture on which his works are based. Marianne Vlaschit's Sauschal was created for the Kunsthalle Wien (2023) and was further developed for Memphis in the special Frozen Nipple Edition. Katharina Anna Loidl, on the other hand, examines the connecting element of rural nature with urban architecture and the conditions of human existence in post-industrial landscapes. Her print Black matter shows a winding tower at the moment of demolition. The confrontation of complex futuristic aesthetics with classical architectural components characterises Andreas Werner's works. The title quotes ‘Solaris’ by Stanisław Lem: ‘But what I am going to see? - I don't know. In a certain sense, it depends on you.’ Certainly unique are the photographs in the work Kaltes Feuer. Axel Töpfer shot them during the filming of Björn Kämmerer's film Conference (2025). The animated movement of the fire in the film is contrasted here - through the transparency and folding of the exposed photographic paper - with a non-linear form of cinematic movement. Each object in the edition is therefore unique.
By purchasing Christmas presents this year, we would like to encourage you to directly support the activities of Kunstraum Memphis. The limited editions are now available via e-mail or in our website, with the proceeds benefiting the artists and Kunstraum Memphis in equal parts.
The works mostly refer in a playful way to the artists' exhibitions at Kunstraum Memphis and the themes dealt within this context.
All new and existing editions can be seen in the Editions exhibition until 29 December 2023 and can be acquired on site or online. We look forward to you stopping by!
