Karin Fisslthaler is a visual artist, filmmaker and musician. Her work deals with questions of media representation of the body and body language, communication and identity constructions, often focusing on the representation of gestures and touches, which she detaches from their context and assembles into new images. In her current collages, she reflects on the situation of physical encounters and contacts, which has been changed by the COVID- 19 reality. Physical closeness becomes a desire and a fiction that is only hinted at in historical images, mostly from the world of cinema and from pre-existing material. With the techniques of cut-outs and the composition of new voids, not only absence and distance are emphasised, but also spaces of thought are opened up for the viewer. Karin Fisslthaler studied experimental design in Linz, she lives and works freelance in Vienna.
